Health insurance for the Spanish
Non-Lucrative Visa.

You've picked your consulate. You've gathered your papers. The piece that trips up most applicants is the health insurance certificate — Spanish consulates want a very specific kind of cover, and travel insurance doesn't count.

I set up NLV policies every week.

I'm Yana — official Sanitas agent, nationwide. English-speaking, personal, and available on WhatsApp before, during and after your visa application.

If your embassy appointment is close, tell me — I can prioritise the paperwork so it's ready in time.

Six questions before your consulate.

The practical answers every NLV applicant asks me. If your question isn't here, ping me on WhatsApp — I answer every one myself.

What health insurance do I need for the Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa?

Spanish consulates require comprehensive private health insurance from a Spanish-authorised insurer. Travel insurance is not accepted. The policy must include:

  • Sin copagos — zero co-payments or deductibles.
  • Sin carencias — full cover from day one, no waiting periods.
  • Full cover equivalent to the Spanish public health system (medical, surgical, hospital, emergency).
  • Repatriation cover — required by most consulates.

Sanitas Residents Visado is built to meet every one of these requirements out of the box.

Which Sanitas policy works for the Non-Lucrative Visa?

Sanitas Residents Visado is the policy I recommend to most NLV applicants. It's built specifically for foreign residents — no copay, no waiting periods, repatriation included. Accepted by every Spanish consulate I've worked with.

For American clients, Sanitas Residents Platinum adds full USA cover up to €500,000 and 90% worldwide reimbursement. Same visa-compliance, wider net.

I'll help you decide based on your age, city and situation.

What documents do I receive for my consulate?

Once your policy is activated, you'll receive all the documents your consulate requires — in both Spanish and English.

The official Certificado de Seguro arrives as a PDF within 24–48 hours (Spanish, because that's what every consulate requires for the application file). I also send you the same document in English — so you can actually read what's covered, double-check the details, and know exactly what you're handing over.

When should my policy start?

Here's something many applicants don't know: we can set the policy start date up to 6 months in the future.

That means I can issue your certificate today — ready to attach to your NLV application — with a start date that lines up with when you actually plan to arrive in Spain after your visa is approved. You get the paperwork now, without paying for months of cover you're not using yet.

Most consulates want the start date to match either your embassy appointment or your planned arrival — each consulate has slightly different practice (Miami vs London vs Buenos Aires can differ). I'll help you pick the exact date once I know your consulate and your travel plans.

Can I arrange the policy before I arrive in Spain?

Yes — and you should.

You don't need a NIE or a Spanish bank account. I set up the policy using your passport number, and Sanitas accepts international payment methods. Your Certificado de Seguro is in your inbox before your embassy appointment, not after.

When you later have your NIE and Spanish account, we simply update the policy details.

What happens if my NLV is rejected?

Simple rule: as long as you send me proof of the visa rejection and the policy hasn't been used yet, we cancel and refund in full.

That's true whether the policy has already started or not — what matters is whether you've actually used it (no medical appointments, no claims, no card activated for use).

If the policy has already been used, a full refund isn't available — Sanitas contract terms apply, and we review your case together to see what options exist.

Tell me a little. I'll come back with your options.

I write every quote myself. No auto-reply. No call centre.

  • The two or three real NLV options that fit your situation — not the whole Sanitas catalogue.
  • The medical network for your postcode — the Sanitas hospitals, clinics and English-speaking doctors near where you'll live.
  • Honest annual cost — including every discount I can apply.
  • The visa certificate process — how fast we can move, what your consulate needs.

That's the whole quote. Nothing hidden. Nothing you have to translate.
